Stars Fall To Cardinals Despite Late Push

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team fell to the visiting North Central College Cardinals 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at West Campus Field in River Forest.  The Stars fell behind 2-0 before Jonathan Arzeta's (Des Plaines, Ill.) goal in the 79th minute pulled the host Stars to within one.

North Central got on the board in the first half, as Evan Landmark netted his second goal of the season in the 27th minute.  A Dominican turnover out near midfield led to a long cross to Lucas Habeeb who settled before leaving a pass for Landmark near the top of the 18-yard box.  Landmark one-timed a shot, beating Dominican's Zach Watson (Carol Stream, Ill.) inside the post.

The score remained 1-0 into the second half when a deflected shot caromed to the head of Chandler Olah.  Olah's header banged off the post but Mark Brindle was there to put the rebound in the back of the net.

The Stars finally broke through in the 79th minute as Arzeta dribbled from 27-yards out, splitting as many as four defenders to fight his way into the 18-yard box.  Arzeta momentarily lost the ball but got it back before sliding a shot that beat the Cardinals' Sebastian Garcia inside the near post.  The tally was the first of the year for the freshman Arzeta.

Dominican came close to scoring the equalizer in the 84th minute, but Ryan Ybarra's (Des Plaines, Ill.) shot from 17-yards out was pushed over the cross bar by Garcia.

Dominican held a slight, 15-14, advantage in shots with both teams putting five shots on goal.  The Cardinals' Garcia logged four saves while Dominican's Watson posted three.  The teams were even at 5-5 in corners while the Cardinals committed 17 fouls to just four whistled against the Stars.

The loss is the second in a row for the Stars to open the 2014 season, just the second time Dominican has lost back-to-back games to start a season since 2000.  The last time, in 2007, the Stars went on to win nine straight and finished the season with a 17-4-1 overall record.

Dominican returns to the pitch on Saturday, hosting the Washington University Bears for a 2:30 p.m. kickoff on West Campus Field.
