Stars Rally To Score Draw With Visiting Bears

Box Score The Dominican University men's soccer team erased a 1-0 deficit with less than eleven minutes to play, settling for a 1-1 draw with the visiting Washington University Bears on Saturday afternoon in River Forest.

"The guys responded today," commented head coach Erick Baumann when asked about his side's performance.  "We showed up with good intensity and a good compete level to play against a very good Washington University team."

The Bears threw everything at the Stars in the first half, outshooting Dominican 12-4.  Dominican's Gabriel Gongora (Naperville, Ill.) kept the Stars in the game, making five saves in the first half, including stopping Washington University's Jonathan Lipsey's penalty kick attempt in the eighth minute to keep the game scoreless.

Washington University eventually broke through in the first half, with Grant Baltes lining a shot past Gongora from 21-yards out down the middle of the field.

The tally seemed to wake up the Stars as Dominican took three of the last four shots of the half, momentum that carried over into the second 45.

The Stars threw numbers forward throughout the majority of second half, eventually netting the equalizer in the 80th minute as Ryan Ybarra (Des Plaines, Ill.) carried towards the endline before sending low service through the six-yard box with Carmelo Abate (Bartlett, Ill.) getting on the end of the cross at the back post and flicking a shot off his heel and into the goal.

The Bears made a push to close out regulation but Gongora made a point-blank save on Jack West who slipped in behind the Stars' back line and got off a sliding shot but Gongora, coming off his line, cut down the angle and sent the game to overtime.

The best chance for either team came in the second overtime when Adam Yaghmour (Norridge, Ill.) got in behind the Bears' backline for a 1v1 with Nick Tannenbaum, the Washington University goalkeeper, but Tannenbaum came off his line and slid to take the ball away from Yaghmour 16-yards away from the goal.

"The game could have gone either way," said Baumann.  "This is one step in the right direction. We need to keep making those positive steps and continue to improve."

The Stars, now 0-2-1, return to the pitch on Tuesday, heading to Wheaton to take on the tenth-ranked Thunder.  The match is slated for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff under the lights at Joe Beane Stadium.
