The Dominican University men's soccer team is headed to the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship for the 15
th time in program history and second straight season after a 4-1 win over the MSOE Raiders in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Tournament championship match on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee. For their first round match of the national tournament, the Stars have been paired with the Gustavus Adolphus College Gusties at the Decorah Regional, hosted by Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. Kickoff between the Stars and Gusties is slated for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday evening.
The Stars, 14-5-1 on the season, are riding a season-best six-match winning streak and eight-match unbeaten streak dating back to October 13. During the stretch, Dominican has outscored its opponents 24-7 with a pair of shutouts included along the way. Dominican's high-powered attack features six different players with at least six goals including team-leader
Isaac Perez who has netted ten goals on the season to go along with 12 assists for a total of 32 points. Over the last six games, Perez has caught fire, scoring five goals and dishing out six assists.
Freshman
Jonathan Hernandez and junior
Nicolo Vitale rank second and third on the team respectively with eight and seven goals while
Denis Soldo ranks third on the team in points with six goals and eight assists.
Josh Prindle and
Alexander Lulek have added six goals apiece with Prindle netting the game-winner for Dominican in the NACC Tournament semifinals and final.
Defensively, Dominican's freshman goalkeeper
Daniel Dominguez was a Second Team All-NACC selection after the rookie posted a 0.95 goals against average for the season with five shutouts. Seniors
Michael Delaney and
Carlos Ramos anchor the Stars' back line along with
Marco Sanchez and
Benji Ibarra. Together, the group has helped Dominican post seven shutouts on the season with a 0.94 goals against average.
The Gusties, 14-3-1, have nearly as much tournament experience as Dominican, making their 12
th trip to the national tournament all-time, including a national runner-up finish in 2005. Gustavus won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular season title before getting upset in the MIAC semifinals by the fifth-seeded Augsburg Auggies.
The Gusties averaged 2.17 goals per game during its 18-game regular season to go along with a 0.75 goals against average and seven shutouts. Arthur Parens has scored a team-high ten goals for the Gusties followed by Matt Gibbons who has seven goals to go along with 11 assists.
Luther College, winners of the American Rivers Conference tournament, and Knox College round out the Decorah Regional. Winners of Saturday's matches will square off on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to next weekend's sectional rounds.
Ticket prices for Saturday's match will be $6 for adults, $3 for students and seniors, and $2 for children ages 3-12.
