With the score tied at 42-42 with 13:41 to play, the Dominican University women’s basketball team embarked on a 30-4 run over the next ten minutes to open a 26-point lead en route to a 77-54 win over the Aurora University Spartans in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action on Wednesday night. The win improves the Stars to 13-3 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
Freshman
Magdalena Kaminska (Orland Park, Ill.) ignited the Stars’ run with a three-point play. Kaminska then forced back-to-back turnovers at the top of the Stars’ press, both leading to lay ups for fellow freshman
Katie Budz (Orland Park, Ill.).
Dominican outscored the Spartans 43-19 in the second half, shooting over 53 percent (17-for-32) from the field in the half, including going 6-for-14 from behind the three-point arc. On defense, the Stars forced 14 turnovers in the half and held the Spartans to 6-for-21 shooting from the field.
Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) led the Stars second half offensive outburst, scoring 12 of her team-high 19 points in the period. Blom was 7-for-12 from the field on the night, connecting on five three-pointers, to lead four players in double-figures scoring for the Stars. Kaminska added 16 points while
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) and Katie Budz scored ten points apiece in the winning effort. Sarah Budz and Blom also shared game-high honors with seven assists apiece.
Now half way through the NAC regular season, the Stars hold a two-game lead in the NAC South Division standings. Dominican returns to action on Saturday, heading to Milwaukee, Wis., to take on the Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors. Tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in WLC’s Rex Complex.
