The Dominican University women’s basketball team fell for the first time this season in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action, falling to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons 89-83 on Saturday afternoon at the John Buuck Field House in Mequon, Wis. The Stars led by three with under three minutes to play in the first half after a lay in by freshman Ashley Oliver (Bolingbrook, Ill.) gave Dominican a 36-33 advantage, but the Falcons finished the half on an 8-2 run to take a 41-38 halftime lead and led the rest of the way.
A 7-0 run over the first three minutes of the second half put the Falcons ahead 48-38 en route to the six-point victory.
Sarah Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) scored a game-high 25 points to lead four players in double-figures in the losing effort for the Stars. Budz was 11-for-19 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists in the all-around effort.
Freshman Magdalena Kaminska (Orland Park, Ill.) logged her third double-double in the last four games for Dominican, posting 14 points and 11 rebounds. Juniors Becky Christofferson (Summit, S.D.) and Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) added 13 and 11 points respectively for the Stars.
Dominican shot 50 percent from the field (34-68), including going 6-for-16 from three-point range, but managed to convert on just nine of the team’s 20 attempts from the free throw line.
The Falcons, paced by Tiffany Hendrickson and Katie Luethe who scored 19 points apiece, went 32-for-63 from the field and converted on 20 of 25 attempts from the charity stripe.
The loss drops the Stars to 11-3 on the season and 7-1 in NAC play. Dominican will return to action on Tuesday, playing host to the Benedictine University Eagles in a meeting of the first and second place teams in the NAC South Division. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Dominican’s Igini Sports Forum.
