Stars Clinch Share Of NAC South Title

Box Score The Dominican University women's basketball team clinched at least a share of the 2012 Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) South Division title on Saturday afternoon with a 79-70 win over the Aurora University Spartans coupled with a loss by the MSOE Raiders at Concordia University Chicago.

The Stars built up a 16-point lead at the break, shooting 15-for-31 from the field and connecting on eight attempts from three-point range while committing just four turnovers. Kayla Blom (Circle Pines, Minn.) scored nine of her 13 points in the opening stanza, connecting on 3-of-4 attempts from behind the three-point stripe.

The second half was a much different story as the Spartans chipped away at the Dominican lead but was never really a threat, getting within nine in the final minute. While Laura Knieps (Tinley Park, Ill.) scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half, the rest of the team was just 7-for-25 from the field in the half, scoring 23 points.

Blom finished the night with 13 points while Katie Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) and Magdalena Kaminska (Orland Park, Ill.) came off the bench to add 12 and nine points respectively.

The Spartans were led by Megan Kohrt's game-high 23 points.  The junior guard also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds in the losing effort.

The Stars, now 16-7 overall and 12-4 in conference play,  sit in the driver seat looking for their second straight outright NAC South Division title.  The Stars can secure the division championship with a win on Wednesday night when they host the Benedictine University Eagles.  Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in the Igini Sports Forum.
