Box Score Trailing by just one, 54-53, with under three minutes to play, the Dominican University women’s basketball team was doomed by a seven-point run that spanned 1:35 to propel the host Benedictine University Eagles past the Stars 64-58 in Northern Athletics Conference (NAC) action on Tuesday night.
The Stars shot just 31-percent from the field, but were able to connect on 11 of 27 attempts from three-point distance to hang with the Eagles before facing their largest deficit of the night, 61-53, with just 58 seconds remaining in the second half.
Katie Budz (Orland Park, Ill.) led the Stars’ three-point assault, dropping in three of six attempts from long distance and going a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line for a game-high 17 points in the losing effort. Allie Tapenes (Winfield, Ill.) added 11 points, also knocking down three triples, while
Liz Yakey notched a career-high ten points, going 3-for-4 from the field, including 2-for-3 from three, and 2-for-2 at the foul line.
Sierra Dunner paced the Eagles with 15 points on 5-for-9 shooting from the field while going 5-for-8 at the free-throw stripe. Alexis Joseph and Alanna Ferry added 12 and 11 respectively with Joseph pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.
The loss drops the Stars to 0-14 on the season and 0-6 in NAC play. Dominican has just one day rest before returning to the hardwood on Thursday night, traveling down Division Street to take on the Concordia Chicago Cougars. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Cougars’ Geiseman Gymnasium.
