Stars Outlasted In Season Debut

Box Score The Dominican University women's basketball team opened the 2013-2014 season on Friday night at the Viking Invite hosted by North Park University, falling to the Knox College Prairie Fire 105-93.

Kaylee Paciora (Scottsdale, Ariz.) led all scorers, pouring in 25 points on 9-for-12 shooting from the field while going 7-for-11 at the free throw line in the losing effort in a game dictated by the fast-paced Prairie Fire style.

Dominican led by as many as 14 points early in the second half but ran out of steam, shooting just 36.5% from the field in the second stanza after going 17-for-30 from the field in the opening 20 minutes. The Stars managed to connect on just one of 13 attempts from three-point distance in the second half, going 4-for-21 on the game.

Jodi Marver's three-point jumper with 10:35 to play in the second half cut the Dominican lead to 73-72. After a Katie Budz lay-up, Knox took their first lead of the half on a jumper by Aly Eastman and then a steal and basket for Becky Duffy.

After Paciora put the Stars back in front on a pair of free throws, the Prairie Fire went on a 13-point run to open an 89-77 lead with 6:54 to play.

The Stars mounted a comeback effort but Alyssa Hernandez's (Bartlett, Ill.) lay-up with 3:59 to play cut the lead down to 91-86 but Dominican could not get any closer the rest of the way.

Hernandez finished with 15 points in her Dominican debut, going 4-for-10 from the field and 7-for-10 from the foul line. Budz added 14 points and Allie Tapanes (West Chicago, Ill.) chipped in 12 but was just 1-for-7 from three in the losing effort.

Marver led six players in double-digits for Knox with 22 points, going 11-for-17 from the foul line.

Dominican has little time to dwell on the loss, returning to action at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday afternoon as they host the Westminster College (PA) Titans.
